What is waiver of premium and when does it apply?
Waiver of premium is an optional feature that means the insurer pays your premiums if you are unable to work through illness or injury for a set period, so your cover continues without you paying. It is subject to a waiting period, often several months, and a definition of incapacity. Your policy schedule will show whether you have it.
How it works
After the waiting period, premiums are waived for as long as you meet the definition, up to the policy's limits. You keep paying until then.
Making a claim
Tell the insurer as soon as you are off work. They will explain the evidence needed, similar to an income protection claim.
Is it worth having?
It protects your cover when money is tightest. Whether it suits you depends on your other income and sick pay.
