Can I add critical illness cover to my life policy?
Sometimes, but often not to an existing policy. Many insurers require a new application for critical illness cover, which is underwritten on your age and health now. Some policies allow it to be added as an alteration. You could also take out a separate critical illness policy alongside your life cover. Ask your insurer or adviser.
Separate or combined
A standalone policy pays out independently of your life cover. A combined policy may pay once, on whichever happens first.
Cost
Critical illness cover is usually more expensive than life cover, because claims are more likely during the term.
