Do I need to survive for a period after diagnosis?
Some critical illness policies require you to survive for a short period after diagnosis, commonly around 10 to 14 days, before the benefit is payable. This is called a survival period. Not all policies have one, and the length varies. Your policy terms will say whether it applies and for how long.
Why it exists
Critical illness cover is designed to support people living with a serious condition. If the person dies very soon after diagnosis, life cover, if they have it, is intended to pay instead.
Where to check
Look in the policy terms or key features document, usually in the definitions or general conditions section. If you are unsure, ask your insurer or adviser.
If you have both covers
Where a policy combines life and critical illness cover, the terms explain which benefit is paid in each situation, and whether paying one ends the other.
