Does life insurance pay if I get cancer?

Life insuranceCritical illness cover
The short answer

Life insurance on its own normally pays only on death, or on a terminal illness diagnosis if it includes terminal illness benefit. It does not usually pay just because you are diagnosed with cancer. Critical illness cover is designed to pay a lump sum on diagnosis of covered cancers that meet the policy definition.

Check what you have

Your policy schedule will show whether critical illness cover is included.

Cancer definitions

Critical illness policies define which cancers are covered and at what stage. Some early-stage cancers qualify for a partial payment.

Support services

Many policies include nurse support or second opinions you can use whether or not you claim.
