How much critical illness cover do I need?
Critical illness
The short answer
Many people aim for enough to cover their living costs for a period of recovery, often one to three years, plus any debts they would want to clear and extra costs such as home adaptations or private treatment. Consider your sick pay, savings and any income protection when deciding.
Mortgage
Some people arrange cover to repay their mortgage on diagnosis.
Partner's income
If your partner might reduce work to care for you, factor in their lost income too.
Affordability
A smaller amount of cover is better than none if cost is a concern.
