I've become self-employed: does my protection still work?

Life insuranceCritical illness coverIncome protection
The short answer

Your personal policies continue as long as premiums are paid. But self-employment usually means no employer sick pay or death-in-service benefit, so you may need more cover. Income protection can be particularly important, and how your income is assessed for a claim may change. Tell your insurer and review your cover.

Income protection

Insurers often use your taxable profits to work out benefit. Check how yours would be calculated.

Deferred period

Without sick pay, you may need benefit to start sooner. Consider whether your deferred period still suits you.

Business cover

If others rely on you in your business, ask about business protection.
