What happens if a beneficiary is a child?
Children can be beneficiaries, but they cannot usually receive money directly until they are adults. The trustees hold and manage the money for them, in line with the trust's terms, and may use it for their benefit, such as education or living costs, before then. Choosing trustees you trust is especially important.
At what age
The trust deed may set an age at which the child can receive the money. In some trusts, it is at the trustees' discretion.
Guardians and trustees
The person caring for your children does not have to be a trustee, but many people appoint them as one.
Without a trust
If the policy is not in trust, money for a child can be tied up in the estate. A trust usually makes this simpler.
