I've been diagnosed with an illness after taking cover: is my policy still valid?
A new diagnosis after your policy has started does not normally affect your existing cover. Your policy is based on the information you gave when you applied. As long as that was accurate and premiums are paid, the cover usually continues. You do not normally need to tell the insurer about new conditions unless your policy says so.
Think carefully before changing cover
Cancelling or replacing your policy now could mean new cover is more expensive, excludes the condition or is unavailable.
You may be able to claim
If you have critical illness or income protection cover, the diagnosis might qualify for a claim. Contact your insurer to check.
Support services
Many policies include nurse support, counselling or second opinions you can use straight away.
This article is general information about UK protection insurance, not personalised financial advice. Policy terms vary between insurers and products, so always check your own policy documents.
