My family knows I had cover but can't find the details.
Start with bank statements, which usually show the insurer's name on the direct debit. Then look through paperwork, emails and the details of any adviser or broker the person used. If you still cannot find it, insurers can search their records using the person's name, date of birth and addresses, and some tracing services can help.
Where to look
Bank statements, annual policy statements, mortgage paperwork (cover was often arranged with a mortgage), employer benefits documents, and correspondence from a financial adviser.
Contacting insurers
If you suspect a particular insurer, contact their bereavement team with the person's full name, date of birth, addresses and date of death.
Making it easier for your own family
Keep a note of your policies, insurers and adviser with your will, and tell your executors or trustees where to find it.
