How long does an insurance claim take?
It depends on the type of claim and how quickly the insurer can get the evidence it needs. Straightforward life claims are often settled within a few weeks of the paperwork arriving. Critical illness and income protection claims can take longer because medical reports are needed. The most common source of delay is waiting for documents or doctors' reports.
What slows a claim down
Missing policy details, waiting for probate where money goes to an estate, and delays getting reports from GPs or specialists. Giving the insurer consent to request medical records early helps.
Income protection
Benefit only starts once the deferred period has passed. Tell the insurer early, ideally well before that point, so the claim can be assessed in time for the first payment.
Keeping track
Ask for a named contact and a list of anything outstanding. If you feel the delay is unreasonable, you can complain to the insurer and, if needed, to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
