What does 'own occupation' mean on income protection?

Income protection
The short answer

Own occupation means the policy pays if you cannot do your own job because of illness or injury, even if you could do other work. It is generally the most comprehensive definition. Other policies use suited occupation (any job suited to your skills and experience) or a list of daily activities, which are harder to claim under.

Why the definition matters

It decides when you can claim. Under own occupation, a surgeon who could no longer operate could claim even if able to teach. Under a stricter definition the same claim might not be paid.

Availability

Some occupations can only get suited occupation or activities-based cover. Own occupation can cost more.

Where to find yours

Your policy schedule and terms state the definition of incapacity. Check it again if your job changes.
