How do I know if I have enough cover?
Compare your cover with what your family would need if you died or became seriously ill: outstanding debts such as your mortgage, ongoing living costs, childcare and education, and how long they would need support. Then subtract other money available, such as savings or employer benefits. An adviser can help you work it out.
Income replacement
A common approach is to estimate your family's yearly costs and multiply by the number of years they would need support.
Illness as well as death
Consider critical illness and income protection too. Being ill can be as financially difficult as dying.
Review over time
Needs change as debts reduce and children grow up.
