Can I cash in my life insurance?

The short answer

Most term life insurance has no cash value, so there is nothing to cash in. If you stop paying, the cover simply ends. Some older whole-of-life or investment-linked policies do have a surrender value, but it can be much lower than the premiums paid. Check your policy documents or ask your insurer before stopping payments.

Term policies

Term life insurance only pays out if the insured person dies during the term. The premiums pay for that cover, in the same way as home or car insurance, so there is no savings element to withdraw. Cancelling ends the cover and premiums are not refunded after the initial cancellation period.

Whole-of-life and investment-linked policies

Some whole-of-life policies, particularly older ones linked to investments, build up a surrender value over time. The insurer can tell you what it is. Surrendering early can return less than you paid in, and it ends the life cover.

Before you cancel

If the aim is to free up money each month, ask whether the cover amount or term could be reduced instead. If you cancel and later need cover again, a new policy will be priced on your age and health at that point.
