Does family medical history affect my life insurance?

Underwriting
The short answer

It can. Insurers often ask whether close relatives, usually parents and siblings, were diagnosed with certain conditions, such as heart disease or some cancers, before a particular age. A relevant family history may lead to a higher premium or exclusion, particularly for critical illness cover. Many people are unaffected.

Answer as best you can

If you are unsure, say so. Insurers understand you may not know every detail.

Genetic tests

Under the UK Code on Genetic Testing and Insurance, insurers do not generally ask for predictive genetic test results, with limited exceptions.

Compare insurers

Different insurers treat family history differently.
