Where can I get support after a serious diagnosis?

All protection
The short answer

Check what your policies offer first. Critical illness cover may pay a lump sum, income protection may pay if you cannot work, and waiver of premium may cover your premiums. Many policies also include nurse support, counselling or second medical opinions you can use straight away. Your GP and NHS services, and charities for your condition, can also help.

Contact your insurer early

You do not need to wait for treatment to finish. The insurer can explain whether you may be able to claim and what evidence is needed.

Practical and financial help

MoneyHelper offers free guidance on money worries, and some charities provide grants and benefits advice.

Someone to help you

You can ask a family member or adviser to deal with the insurer on your behalf.
