Why is my premium higher than the quote, or higher because of my health?

The short answer

Quotes are usually based on standard terms. Once the insurer assesses your full application, including your health, lifestyle and family history, it may offer cover at a higher premium or with an exclusion. This is called underwriting. The insurer or your adviser should explain why the terms changed.

Your options

You can accept the terms, ask whether another insurer might offer better terms, or decline the cover.

Can it be reviewed later?

If the reason, such as a health condition, improves, some insurers will review the extra premium on request.

Accuracy matters

Always answer application questions fully and honestly. Incorrect information could affect a future claim.
