Can I change the day my premium is collected?

All protection
The short answer

Usually, yes. Most insurers let you move your direct debit to a date that suits you better, such as just after payday. Contact the insurer, or the adviser who arranged the policy, and ask. The change normally takes effect from the next collection, and some insurers may collect a part-month premium to bridge the gap.

Why it can help

A payment taken a few days before payday is one of the most common reasons a direct debit fails. Moving the date can prevent missed payments and the risk of cover lapsing.

What to check

Ask whether there will be a one-off adjustment, when the new date starts and whether your cover is affected in the meantime. It should not be, as long as payments continue.

If a payment has already failed

Contact the insurer straight away. They can usually collect the missed premium and set the new date at the same time.
