I've started smoking since taking my policy: do I need to tell my insurer?

Life insuranceCritical illness cover
The short answer

Usually not for an existing policy, as long as you were a non-smoker when you applied and answered honestly. Most policies are based on your circumstances at application. Some policies do ask you to tell the insurer about changes, so check your terms. If you apply for new cover, you must declare that you smoke.

What counts as smoking

Many insurers include vapes, e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement products.

New applications

Smoker rates are higher. Declaring incorrectly could mean a claim is reduced or refused.

If you stop again

After 12 months smoke-free, you may qualify for non-smoker rates on new cover.
